The Bible tells of a stone named “Ebenezer”. Set up between two cities, the stone’s name means, “Thus far has the Lord helped us.”(1 Sam 7:12)
I use the Ebenezer Stones to remember that, thus far has the Lord helped me. Near a chair I use, there is a small stack of Ebenezer Stones. Each stone represents a form of help I believe that the Lord is giving to me as a husband, parent, and pastor.
Over the pile of stones is a banner, reminding me of Christ's friendship. My wife, (and very best friend!) gave me the banner as a gift. Our children found a rock and brought it home because they were reminded of the Ebenezer Stones. Each disciple of Jesus Christ at University Baptist Church receives a stone on special days in their lives.
The Bible tells of the difficulty, doubt, and fear surrounding the encouragement Ebenezer Stones provided. I doubt, am fearful, and lament difficulties, so I keep a stone where I can touch and see it. I too, need to be reminded that thus far the Lord has helped me.
If I remember what God has done for me, I can stand before my wife, our children and a congregation and say, "Thus far has the Lord helped us." (1 Sam 7:12)
